Come April 15 of the following year Irene found out that the tax liability on that particular piece of bank salesmanship would cost her a little over $20,000 in taxes. To add insult to injury her bank salesperson was now working at another branch and her replacement showed little interest in Irene’s plight since no new commissions would be forthcoming. In reality there was little they could have done at that point. It’s like applying the brakes after the collision.
2. Be sure the tax advisor you consult understands the issues. Not all tax preparers can handle complex tax problems like stock options, annuity distributions, Roth conversions and many others. 1. Before you make a financial move always consult with a knowledgeable tax advisor. Find out how much income taxes this will cost you at both state and federal (if you live in New York City or Yonkers, factor them in as well.) Explore alternative strategies. Joe could have stretched his stock options lowering his AMT liability. Irene could have just left her annuity alone, it wasn’t that bad, or perhaps taken smaller distributions over a number of years. Scott could have done the same with converting his IRA to a Roth and Bill should have taken out a mortgage and paid it with monthly distributions from his IRA thus stretching his tax liability and avoiding the higher brackets.
THE BEST TAX TIP…EVER!
Joe, Irene, Scott and Bill, all had different problems but the results were the same. Joe found out that exercising stock options not only create income taxes, both state and federal at the highest rate, but also trigger an AMT liability on top of everything else.
Irene learned that annuities do not “expire.” The penalty period simply ends, prompting the bank salesperson to make another sale. The second thing that Irene learned is about the built-in taxable gains. Annuities are retirement vehicles, never meant to be bought and sold. Using them in this fashion is misusing a good tool, sort of like trying to bang in a nail with a saw. It won’t work, but it doesn’t mean the saw is not good.
Scott learned that no matter how great the deal from the brokerage was, the tax laws still make a Roth conversion fully taxable. Sure it’s easier now, and in certain cases it’s still a smart thing to do, but not always. In Scott’s case, it clearly wasn’t.
As for Bill, he ran up against the inevitable. Distributions from an IRA are always taxable. Sure the 10% penalty vanishes at age 591/2, but you’ve still got the tax brackets up to 28% federal and 7% New York State (After the 20% exemption – yeah,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], NY managed to give us a break there.) Problem was that after Bill added his and his wife’s W-2’s from his last year of work, and his severance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], accumulated sick days and vacation time, his income was pretty high that year. Throw in a major distribution from his IRA and Bill is riding the locomotive on a tax-wreck.
Now you might wonder, that these are all different tax problems whose solutions are as different as hockey is from baseball. While this is true, it leads to the greatest tax tip ever:

Joe thought this would be a great time to buy that summerhouse his family had always wanted, so he exercised his stock options in one year. Six months later at tax time, Joe discovered that exercising those stock options triggered an AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) liability to the tune of $67,000. The only break Joe got in this whole thing is that he hadn’t bought the house yet so he had the cash available to give to the IRS….instead of buying the summer place.

It’s a common statement I hear all the time. Whether someone has a physical illness, an emotional challenge, a re-occurring relationship pattern or a sleep issue, it seems to always be referred as being part of their genes or their DNA because where else could it come from?
As one Buddhist monk told me many years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ‘when we are born we are like a pure white cloth but by the time we reach our teenage years this cloth has become stained. By the time we realise that our cloth is stained we’re usually around the age of 28 years old’ (In the school of astrology this is known as Saturn Return but that is another story altogether!). It is usually around this age that we decide to make some fairly big life changing decisions and most of us work to clean and restore this this cloth, but as you know not all stains can be removed.
The stains that we get are like impressions left on our sub-conscious mind by parents, siblings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], teachers, friends and day-to-day experiences. The stain is nothing more than a memory of a ‘state’ from a particular time in your life. This state creates a mindset or a decision and from that point we live out our lives based on that decision. Eventually this decision creates a habit with which you play out every day.
Habits come in all forms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they can come from fear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], joy and sadness but what’s most common is worry. What is it that you do or don’t do today because of the worry that was ingrained into you as a child? Quite often the way you respond to the world is due to the beliefs that were handed down to you and now they are yours to hand on down to someone else. These beliefs create habits. And a habit is doing the same thing over and over again unconsciously. If you have a habit of placing large amounts of salt on your food because you were told it would prevent cramps then this worry of getting cramps can turn into a heart attack,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just like your parents and their parents before you. Heart attacks are in our DNA! Or is it really the habit of too much salt on your food to prevent cramps?
The way we stand, the way walk, talk and what we eat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the way we respond to particular discussions and the way our bodies respond to food are all due to habits, not DNA.
Is it possible that your grandmother taught your mother what foods to eat and how to cook them, what to talk about at the dinner table and not talk about,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how to respond to certain opinions with body actions and gestures and is it possible you now do exactly the same thing? A family that grows up eating mainly fried food (and you all know what I think about fried foods) generation after generation, did cancer get passed through their DNA or could it simply have been poorly learned eating habits?
I have spoken before on how each of our organs corresponds to and is associated with a particular emotion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for example the liver is associated with anger and stress. Could it be possible that your body physically responds to certain comments in the exact same manner as your grandmother and mother did?
Let me explain. Say, while you were eating dinner, your partner made a comment about money or something that really stirs you up. This emotion stirs the liver; the liver becomes hot and agitated. The liver energy now attacks the stomach energy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the stomach energy reacts and instead of the stomach energy descending, as it should,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it shoots upwards and as a result you now have indigestion.
So the question you need to ask is, did that bout of indigestion come about because it’s in your genes because your mother had it, and her mother had it? Could the source of indigestion just be one of the stains in your white cloth that you learned from many years ago? We are creatures of habits and quite often, an illness or situation we have is because we learned to do something exactly the same way our parents did and their parents did and have done so for generations.

There is nothing more relaxing than walking into a scent filled room. It feels like my senses drink up the smell of essential oils. If I am feeling like my head is swirling, I take about 5 minutes to go sit outside with my bamboo candle, light it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and inhale the wonderful scent. I take the time to be grateful for the time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then for the flame and finally for the scent.. For me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is very relaxing..
If you ever want to quickly get into the ‘moment’.. take a few minutes to focus 100% of your loving energy to a pet or another loving animal. Stroke your pet, focussing on loving intent being sent to every part of his body.. You will feel better, and so will your pet. If you don’t have a pet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], find one. I was recently out of town,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and went to a local animal adoption and spent over 30 minutes giving love to a dog who needed it.. I must have needed it too!!
We all have cameras on our cell phones.. and when we have a chance, we stop to snap a ‘quick’ picture of something we like. But.. if we stop, and focus on shooting a photo of a flying bird,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a tumbling tumbleweed, or even a cute little goldfish…to just witness their movement and savor the moment, while waiting for the perfect time to snap your photo..you will notice how much you will relax, your breathing will become calmer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and as a side bonus, you will create some amazing photos at the same time.

After all it's culturally ingrained to be modest. Arrogance is loathed and condemned. In Australia if you brag you are seen as someone who Big Notes and needs to be cut down to size. There is even a saying for this: 'the Tall Poppy Syndrome' - all poppies that rise above others need to have their heads chopped back.
And I suspect I am not the only one!
Appreciation does not raise you above others - it raises your vibration. Thus you are more influential and positive.
